These devices are used to measure the amount of water that is consumed by a residential or commercial building. Water meters can also be used to measure the amount of water departing a source, such as a water tank or a well. When it comes to water flow meters, there are two common types of measurements used to quantify consumption, displacement, and velocity.

Water metering is used to measure residential and commercial water consumption so that they can be charged by the city or the water company for their usage. This helps conserve water and prevents waste. One way in which they accomplish this is by detecting increased usage caused by leaks within a water system.

There are different register options when it comes to water flow meters. The standard type has the dial, much like on a clock, with numbers around the face. There is usually an odometer on the face of the device to indicate the amount of water in gallons.

Water flow meters have become a very efficient way to measure the water that we use. Used on a daily basis, they can be used to trace our water usage, detect leaks, and offer solutions for water conservation. PlumbersStock strives to provide a wide selection of water meters for sale for residential, commercial, and municipal application.

Residential, commercial, and apartment main meters are maintained by Fairfax Water. Sub-meters obtained through Fairfax Water for pools, irrigation, and cooling towers are also maintained by Fairfax Water. Fairfax Water does not maintain privately purchased meters.

If a leak is suspected on an inside water meter, send a picture(s) showing the location of the leak to: metershopappointments@fairfaxwater.org. Once the picture(s) is reviewed, someone from the Meter Shop will respond with further instructions.

The Meter Maintenance Program identifies inside meters that have registered over 1.5 million gallons of water and need to be replaced. Fairfax Water will first notify customers in writing, advising them to schedule an appointment to have a meter service technician come to their house to replace the meter. After the initial notification, follow up notifications may be made in person by a meter service technician and/or in writing.

Fairfax Water permits various entities the metered use of fire hydrants within the Fairfax Water service area. To obtain a fire hydrant meter for a new or existing account, please fill out the Fire Hydrant Use Permit Procedures, General Conditions, and Agreement. The Permit Application can either be emailed to: hydrantmeters@fairfaxwater.org or brought with the deposit fee when a hydrant meter is obtained.

Meter readings must be reported no later than the last day of each month, regardless of usage. Failure to report readings may result in a fine of up to $250 per meter, or the revocation of the permit. Readings may be reported by using either of the three methods:

Violation of the rules and regulations may result in charges of up to $250 per meter, revocation of the permit, and/or prosecution under section 62-2-8 subsection 901.11 of the Fairfax County Code. Further information can be found on the Fire Hydrant Use Permit Procedures, General Conditions, and Agreement.

Until your replacement meter is installed, the Water Revenue Bureau will bill you for estimated usage. Estimated usage is based on the amount of water used in the past and the size of your existing meter.

Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) uses radio waves to transmit information about your water usage. This allows a City representative to read your meter without entering your home. AMR readings happen once a month.

Please note: Purchasing a water meter refers to buying the right to use the water meter and paying for on-demand service from the water system. TVWD owns the physical water meter and the fittings behind the meter.

Before you're able to purchase a water meter, TVWD will need a copy of the building permit, with the address, and information to determine the needed water meter size. Water meter sizes are based on the plumbing fixture count.

Multi-Jet water meters are the most common type of meters used in residential and commercial sub-metering applications. The time-tested working principle provides great accuracy and a wide flow range that maintains that degree of accuracy.

They must be installed horizontally with the register facing directly upwards in order to maintain accuracy. These meters all come with Union NPT male fittings that make positioning and removal simple.

Nutating disc meters are also commonly used as residential water meters. They look very similar to a multi-jet meter on the outside, but the internals are completely different. The popular Neptune T10 is of this type, but it does not offer a pulse output option.

Piston type positive displacement meters are yet another completely different internal design. They are great for low flow rates. Pulse output is available on both series of this type. 1 pulse per gallon or 20 pulses per gallon.

Homes keep getting smarter and smarter. These meters will add your water usage to what it knows. These "Smart Home" water meters will allow you to access your water usage data either online or using a mobile app. They feature usage logging, graphical views of the data, leak & freeze alerts, automatic reporting, etc.

The WM Series residential water meters are multi-jet (inferential) impeller meters. They measure total flow in gallons. The impeller and magnet are the only moving parts in the measuring chamber. The chamber is located in a strainer basket, which allows for high amounts of impurities to be passed through the meter without affecting its operation. The impeller movement is transferred by a magnetic coupling to the hermetically sealed register. These are perfect for submetering water in multi unit apartments & commercial buildings.

In case of a water leak or other water emergency, here's how to locate your water meter and turn off the water supply to your home or irrigation system. It's really quite simple if you know what to look for and what to do.

This flow indicator triangle (#1.) rotates whenever water flows through the meter. If the triangle turns when all the water is off on your property, you may have a leak, which should be investigated.

Each full revolution of the register sweep hand (#2.) indicates that one cubic foot of water (about 7.48 gallons) has passed through the meter. The markings at the outer edge of the dial indicate tenths and hundredths of one cubic foot.

The water meter register (#3.) is a lot like the mileage odometer on your car. The numbers keep a running total of all the water that has passed through the meter. How does LVMWD read this meter? The meter is read in HCF (Hundred Cubic Feet), the HCF is then converted to units of water. One unit of water is 748 gallons. For example, if your previous meter read was 1,325 and today's read is 1,332, you have used 7 units of water between reads.

Write down the reading on the register of your meter and mark the position of the register sweep hand on the glass face of the meter dial, aslo watch the flow indicator triangle (1.) rotates whenver water flows through the meter. If the triangle turns when all the water is off on your property, you may have a leak, which should be investigated.

Wait approximately 15 minutes and look at the meter again. If the sweep hand has moved or the reading has changed you may have a leak on your property. Locating and fixing a leak may require a plumber or other professional.

Another area to check is your lawn irrigation system, especially if it's automated and goes on when you are asleep or away from your home. Manually operate the stations and look for broken sprinkler heads. Also check for water bubbling from the ground, which could indicate a broken pipe.

The image of the water meter in the service box shows a typical water service for a residential customer. Starting from the street side of the service, #1 is the district's service valve (to be manipulated ONLY by district technicians), #2 is the water meter (which records your water use), and #3 is the customer handle, installed so you can shut off the water to your home in case of an emergency.

Occasionally, the size of a domestic water meter installed when a structure was originally built is no longer appropriate. Additionally, the minimum monthly charge for a water bill is calculated based upon the size of the meter. If the meter is too large, a property owner may be paying more than is required. This may result in a meter sizing request.

Property owners of any structure that is not a single-family home are required to request upsizing their domestic water meter through the development permit process. Through this process, the applicant must provide PWSA with information regarding water demand and the use of the building.

Property owners are eligible to request to downsize a domestic water meter with the Meter Sizing Application or the webform at the bottom of this webpage. If your building has a residential sprinkler system with a 1" meter, you cannot downsize.

Our systems are engineered for versatility, so a system that starts with a kit can be easily expanded as landscaping and watering needs change. By manufacturing parts with fewer pieces, we keep installation simple, with little opportunity for mistakes.
